The Canals Upholding the City's Joyfulness
Originally founded in 1782 by King Rama I, Bangkok was built upon Rattanakosin Island along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, surrounded by fortified walls and canals which protected it from invaders. The Canal shaped Thai culture and was an integral part of people’s lives. Beyond transport, the waterway was also a vital lifeline for trade, culture, and defense, connecting various landmarks, temples, floating markets, and historic forts.

Connecting Canals
Stretching 5.5 kilometers, the Phadung Krung Kasem Canal was created to connect a significant section of the Chao Phraya River to enable a more convenient transportation route.
Running through the heart of Bangkok, the Phadung Krung Kasem canal connects various mass transit systems, whether via wheels, rails or boats, joining routes from both sides of the Canal, which supports the connection of mass transit systems from the Chao Phraya River near Thewet Pier to Hua Lamphong Sky train Station.
